Musikong Bumbong literally meaning Bamboo Music, is a Filipino musical ensemble that perform with woodwind instruments made out of Bamboo. The instruments of Musikong Bumbong are made in the shape similar to those in a Brass band. Bamboo is a common material in precolonial Philippines, it is used in a variety of ways, ranging from tools, furniture, building material, agricultural and fishing gear, and handicrafts [2]. Bamboo instruments are not new in the Philippines, the Kulintang ensemble uses bamboo instruments. Musikong Bumbong started out as a small band called Banda de Boca in Barangay Tonsuya, Malabon in 1896 by Felix Ramos. Initially, the members of the band are members of the Katipunan. The band formed as a result of ingenuity and creativity of the Filipino people. The band would usually play in events such as weddings and town fiestas. The band underwent several changes and is currently in its Fourth generation.
The Musikong Bumbong is facing a steady decline due to the shortage of people who can make and play instruments. The Polytechnic University of the Philippines has it's own version of Musikong Bumbong called the Banda Kawayan. The town of Obando, Bulacan continues the tradition of Musikong Bumbong during the month of May.
