caprizaen (2024)

The project “caprizaen” turns to the likes of the Grimm Brothers and Aesop’s fables for inspiration. These morality tales for children, populated by animal characters, explore everything from the self-loathing generated by peer pres- sure to the perils of self-righteousness.
“Caprizaen” is a shortfilm that challenges the romanticized notion of rural life. Instead of portraying rural life as a pas- toral, idyllic setting, the film explores the various tensions and conflicts that exist within this environment.
The plot of the film focuses on grappling with the challenges arising from the collision of technology and society, as well as issues surrounding land use. A central motif of the film is the idea of camouflage and mirroring. The charac- ters in the film often find themselves having to disguise or conceal their true intentions as they navigate the conflicts and intrigues within the rural community.
“Caprizaen” was filmed in the form of a dystopian mockumentary, shot on Samothraki, a Greek island inhabited by more goats than humans. It explores artistic internet metaphors, conspiracy theories, animal agendas, and human urban flight. The film was shot by a robotic goat, which also provides accompanying texts and descriptions of the captured images based on an image-to-speech generator. Additionally, a drone disguised as a dove films from a distance, while the robotic goat captures images from the perspective of the goats. Acting as a hybrid creature, the robotic goat serves as a mediator between two worlds, functioning as both a peer and a rural influencer.
The project is funded by die Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg, Behörde für Kultur und Medien and Hamburgische Kulturstiftung
